- Goals
-
The main objectives of the Map İstanbul project are to effectively present Istanbul’s spatial data in a digital environment, to enable users to easily access this data in their daily lives, and to provide data-driven support for local government decision-making processes.
The project aims to address key urban challenges that directly affect quality of life, such as traffic congestion, inefficient transportation systems, disaster management, environmental pollution, difficulties in accessing social services, and sustainable environmental management, which have emerged due to Istanbul’s rapid growth and dense population.
- Project Results
-
As a result of the project, citizens have been gained fast and easy access to real-time, location-based information about the city, enabling more informed monitoring of traffic and environmental conditions. Access to social facilities and public services was simplified, and spatial awareness was enhanced through a 3D city model.
Consequently, residents’ interaction with the city has become more conscious and data-driven, enabling them to play a more active role in decision-making processes. With its user-friendly interface, AI-powered address search engine, three-dimensional digital twin, and interactive features, the application has enabled users to effectively explore both the physical and digital structures of Istanbul. Thus, urban interaction has become more efficient and dynamic, accelerating the city’s digital transformation.
The uniqueness of the project
The management of spatial data on digital platforms, its visualization through maps to establish information systems, and the processing of streaming data for continuous monitoring digital analysis have transformed traditional business models, which were previously maintained through physical archives, using modern technologies.
Digital maps enable faster data processing, predictive capabilities, user-focused customization, visualization, integration, and informed decision-making, thereby making urban management more efficient and dynamic. By offering an experience far beyond traditional maps, they allow users to make more informed, faster, and effective decisions. For this reasons, Map Istanbul, created using artificial intelligence technologies, emerges as an innovative and forward-looking solution.
Additionally, interactive features such as the city-specific word game, Kelime İstanbul (Word Istanbul), add a fun and unique dimension to the application.
- Used software
-
Map Istanbul is an integrated map platform developed entirely with Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) resources, offering multi-layered city data. The application consolidates basemap and thematic layers from diverse data sources, a spatial search engine, route planning services, and analytical tools under a single interface.
The system is built on a modern and scalable architecture. On the front end, a React-based dynamic interface ensures a high-performance, interactive user experience. On the back end, a microservice architecture developed using Python, NodeJS and .NET allows the platform to handle diverse datasets while remaining stable and efficient under high user traffic.Data flows are managed via API integrations with IMM’s internal systems and open data sources, enabling easy addition of new datasets and real-time updates of map layers. For performance optimization, techniques such as caching, load balancing, and asynchronous data processing have been implemented.
- Difficulty of implementation
-
The main challenge encountered during the implementation of the project was ensuring the accurate and up-to-date representation of Istanbul’s spatial data in a digital environment. The city’s continuously changing infrastructure and ongoing urban transformation made it difficult to maintain regularly updated spatial data.
Additionally, integrating and harmonizing data from multiple sources was a technically complex process. Designing a user-friendly interface that could appeal to users of all ages was another challenge. Moreover, the 3D digital twin and AI-based analyses, which require high computational power and storage capacity, necessitated continuous optimization of the system infrastructure. Despite these challenges, all obstacles were overcome through continuous improvement and innovative solutions.
- Project Description
-
Map Istanbul is a map-based, mobile-compatible web application developed by IMM, featuring a user-friendly interface and innovative spatial data technologies.
With its AI-powered infrastructure, the platform provides a comprehensive view of city data, serving as a powerful decision-support tool for both citizens and local administrators. Its data-driven analysis capabilities effectively support urban planning, city management, and strategic decision-making, positioning Map Istanbul as a key digital tool for local governments. For individual users, it acts as a daily life guide, while for institutional users, it offers a high-potential platform for modern urban governance. The application offers users fast and accurate location-based search through an AI-powered address search engine and a “search nearby” feature. Additionally, it supports efficient urban transportation planning by providing the ability to calculate routes for multiple points. The application also provides users with real-time information on traffic congestion and weather updates within the city, offering up-to-date data on urban mobility. This enables users to make informed travel decisions and, if necessary, choose alternative routes. Through 360° panoramic street views, users can explore various regions of Istanbul with both current and historical imagery. This feature serves as a valuable analytical tool for those wishing to examine the city’s physical transformation. Additionally, users can closely observe different spatial data of Istanbul via thematic maps and extensive data categories, and, with the timeline function, perform in-depth analyses of the city’s development process using historical satellite and aerial imagery. One of the core functions of the application is to enable users to measure distances and areas. This feature is particularly significant from a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) perspective, allowing highly accurate calculations for urban planning, construction, and real estate analysis. One of the most notable features of Map Istanbul is its 3D modeling of the city, which allows users to freely explore Istanbul in a highly realistic three-dimensional environment and experience the historic city along with its cultural heritage in an unforgettable way.In conclusion, Map Istanbul, accessible at https://harita.istanbul/ and https://map.istanbul/ is a powerful platform that integrates all data related to Istanbul, supported by artificial intelligence and a citizen-centered service approach. In addition to serving as a crucial tool for local governments, it holds significant potential as an application that facilitates residents’ daily lives and accelerates data-driven decision-making processes.
