Flight Information Display Systems (FIDS) are digital screens at airports that provide real-time updates on flight schedules, gate assignments, baggage carousels, delays, and boarding status, ensuring smooth passenger flow and efficient communication. Traditionally, each monitor requires a computer, but Smart FIDS eliminates this need, making the system more cost-effective and sustainable.
The primary objectives of the Smart FIDS project benefit airport operators, IT teams, and passengers.
For Airport Operators: Enhance operational efficiency by streamlining FIDS deployment and maintenance, reducing costs, and simplifying infrastructure management.
For IT Teams: Provide robust remote monitoring and control capabilities, enabling centralized management of multiple FIDS screens for real-time updates and improved system reliability.
For Passengers: Improve the travel experience with accurate, real-time information and personalized content through generative AI..
Sustainability: Promote eco-friendly operations by reducing energy consumption and minimizing electronic waste.
- Project Results
-
Smart FIDS has been implemented at three airports, including Ankara Esenboğa International Airport. This key hub for domestic and international travel transformed its FIDS management, saving $250,000 by removing the need for 500 dedicated computers. This initiative significantly reduced the airport's carbon footprint and empowered the team to control monitor settings remotely, streamlining operations and reducing on-site engineering needs.
The uniqueness of the project
The Smart Flight Information Display System (FIDS) represents a significant innovation in airport technology, setting a new standard in functionality and efficiency. By leveraging smart Signage Technology, this system operates independently without the need for separate computers, greatly simplifying deployment and reducing operational costs.
A standout feature is the integration of generative AI, which allows for dynamic content and media creation tailored to passenger needs. This capability empowers airport staff to easily design and update engaging visual displays in real-time, enhancing communication and providing personalized flight information.
Additionally, remote monitoring and control functionalities enable IT teams to manage multiple FIDS screens from a central location. This centralized approach not only optimizes operational efficiency but also ensures that the system remains responsive and up-to-date, minimizing downtime and enhancing the overall passenger experience.
Together, these unique aspects make the Smart FIDS a game-changing solution, promoting sustainability, cost savings, and a superior experience for travelers.
- Used software
-
The main brand used in the project is LG. LG's smart TV technology has been integrated to eliminate the need for computers behind the FIDS screens. In addition, the integration of generative artificial intelligence and in-house software solutions from TAV Technologies have also played a key role in the project's success.
- Difficulty of implementation
-
Implementing TAV Technologies' Smart Flight Information Display Systems (FIDS) can present some challenges, but it is generally considered easier than transitioning to traditional FIDS systems. One of the primary hurdles is system migration, which involves transferring data and settings from the old system to the new one, requiring meticulous planning to avoid service interruptions. Additionally, airports must ensure that their existing network and display infrastructure can support Smart FIDS, which may necessitate upgrades or modifications. Training staff to effectively utilize the new system, particularly the remote monitoring and generative AI features, also requires time and resources. Furthermore, maintaining airport operations during the implementation is crucial; coordinating installations without impacting passenger services can be logistically challenging. However, Smart FIDS offers significant advantages that make the transition worthwhile.

The Vital Role of Flight Information Display Systems (FIDS) at Airports
Flight Information Display Systems (FIDS) are essential communication tools in airports, delivering critical flight-related information to passengers and staff, including gate assignments, baggage carousel details, and flight status updates. However, traditional FIDS systems can be expensive to install and maintain. Airports typically allocate significant budgets for these systems as part of their Capital Expenditure (CapEx) and Operating Expenditure (OpEx) frameworks. Smaller airports may utilize around 100 FIDS monitors, while larger ones can have up to 5,000.
TAV Technologies Smart FIDS: A Game-Changing Solution
TAV Technologies' Smart FIDS revolutionizes airport operations by integrating smart TV technology, eliminating the need for separate computers behind each monitor. Each FIDS screen operates independently with an in-device application developed by TAV Technologies, resulting in reduced costs and simplified deployment.
Key features and benefits include:
- Cost Efficiency: Eliminating the need for dedicated computers leads to significant savings in CapEx and OpEx, simplifying deployment and reducing maintenance costs.
- Remote Monitoring and Control: Smart FIDS allows airport IT teams to manage screens centrally, enabling real-time monitoring and adjustments, enhancing operational efficiency, and minimizing downtime.
- Sustainability: By removing the need for energy-consuming Mini PCs, Smart FIDS significantly lowers energy consumption and carbon emissions. For a medium-sized airport, this solution can save 197,100 kWh annually, translating to a cost saving of approximately $200,000.
- Enhanced Passenger Experience: The integration of generative AI allows for dynamic content generation, optimizing the passenger experience with personalized and relevant flight information.
