Networking Session: The Evolution of the CIO Role in the Modern World

On June 10, 2025, Global CIO hosted an international networking session called “The Evolution of the CIO Role in the Modern World.” IT leaders from different countries came together to discuss how the role of the CIO is changing in today’s fast-paced world.
The session was led by Alice Plotnikova, Community Manager at Global CIO, and moderated by Kate Belyatinskaya, an expert in IT leadership and cross-cultural communication.

What We Talked About
Alice shared the results of a survey about how the CIO role is changing and what skills are most in demand in this transformation.
The research highlighted four key skills that modern CIOs need today:
  • Negotiation and communication – to explain and defend their ideas
  • Public speaking – to confidently speak with top executives and boards
  • Change management – to guide digital transformation projects
  • Leadership and team management – to build strong, motivated teams
After the presentation, participants joined an open conversation. They introduced themselves and shared the challenges they face in their work. This created a strong feeling of connection between IT leaders from different industries and countries.
Together, they discussed what skills are most important for CIOs now and in the future. Many shared personal stories making the conversation practical and valuable for everyone.
