Google Pixel 9 to Get AI Search for Screenshots

Google's upcoming Pixel 9 series smartphones will get even more AI-powered features. One of them will reportedly be Pixel Screenshots, which promises to make it easier to search through screenshots on smartphones. It's somewhat reminiscent of Microsoft's controversial Recall feature, but Google's solution is less "scary."

The controversial and much-talked-about Recall tool in Windows 11 automatically records any user actions on their computer, including screenshots, for future return to the desired moment “in the past.” Anyone with access to the PC can access these screenshots. In contrast, Google’s Pixel Screenshots feature is more privacy-focused and will only process screenshots taken manually to find information on them. Users will be able to turn AI processing on or off for their screenshots at any time, The Verge reports .

Pixel Screenshots will also be able to summarize information from screenshots and answer questions related to their content. Google will also store some metadata, such as web links, the time the screenshot was taken, to make it easier to find them on the device later. The images will be processed by a local AI, presumably a new multimodal version of Gemini Nano.

In addition to Pixel Screenshots, there will be an Add Me tool that lets you add people to group photos, as well as a Studio tool that lets you create stickers and decals.

It is expected that the new AI features could be unveiled alongside the Pixel 9 lineup at the upcoming Made by Google 2024 event on August 13.
