Calls without a network: VoWiFi technology is being introduced in Kazakhstan

Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) technology, which allows making calls without using a cellular network signal, may be launched in Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Digital Development reported.

VoWiFi will be a solution for areas with unstable or no mobile coverage - the technology allows voice traffic to be transmitted via a fixed Internet provider network. This is especially relevant for remote areas and areas with poor signal.

As noted by the Ministry, the implementation of this option is offered to operators as one of the steps to improve the quality of communication services. However, each company will make the decision on implementation independently, taking into account its technical resources and development strategy.

Today, the operator “Kar-Tel ” (Beeline brand) is already testing VoWiFi. The commercial launch of the technology is expected to take place before the end of 2025.

The other major players – Kcell and Mobile Telecom-Service (Tele2/Altel) – are still at the stage of analyzing and working on the issue.
