OpenAI: GPT-5 will combine achievements of different models

OpenAI has confirmed that the upcoming GPT-5 will combine several models. The new large language model should be released this summer, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said. According to him, GPT-5 will be completely free.

ChatGPT currently contains a variety of models for a variety of tasks. While the models are powerful, using them can be confusing because they all have similar names. OpenAI supports the o series for reasoning-related capabilities, while 4o and other models are multimodal.

With GPT-5, the company plans to combine cutting-edge developments from its lines, highlighting the best features.

“We’re really excited to not only create a brand new cutting-edge model, but also to combine our two series,” said OpenAI’s head of developer relations, Romain Huet, who promised to share more about the model combination later.

This spring, OpenAI vice president Jerry Tworek suggested that some of the current models and their capabilities could be combined into the next base model, GPT-5. In May, GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini were released .
